NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary came under attack in Jhenaidah on Friday afternoon when eggs were thrown at him outside a mosque.
The incident occurred in front of the Jhenaidah Old Collectorate Jame Mosque shortly after 2pm.
At least six people, including NCP activists and police personnel, were injured in the ensuing clashes.
According to witnesses, Patwary was leaving the mosque when Sahed Ahmed approached him for a brief conversation. During their exchange, a group of youths standing nearby suddenly hurled eggs at him.
The situation quickly escalated, triggering scuffles between the two sides. Witnesses said another group, armed with iron rods, sticks and hockey sticks, then attacked NCP activists, causing panic in the area in broad daylight. Several local NCP leaders and police personnel were injured while trying to bring the situation under control.
Following the incident, local NCP leaders and activists brought out protest processions in the town. Later, Patwary and senior district leaders went to Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station and initiated preparations to file a case against those involved.
Speaking to reporters, Sahed said Patwary had been making “offensive remarks” about senior BNP leaders during visits to different districts. He said he went to request him not to make such comments and claimed that “some agitated locals” later threw eggs. He denied any involvement of Chhatra Dal in the attack or scuffle.
Alleging political motive behind the incident, Patwary said supporters of law minister and Jhenaidah BNP president Abdul Majid carried out the attack. He demanded justice and also called for the resignation of the home minister and the law minister, saying deterioration in law and order even in the law minister’s own area was unacceptable.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Asadujjaman said police brought the situation under control shortly after the incident. Additional forces were deployed at key points in the town to prevent further unrest.
He added that although Patwary and other NCP leaders visited the police station, no written complaint had yet been filed. Legal action would follow once a complaint is submitted after investigation.
