The youth seen in a viral video allegedly collecting “extortion money” from a private car in Jigatola area of Dhaka’s Dhanmondi, has been placed on a three-day remand by the court.
On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Azharul Islam issued the remand order after a hearing.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Dhanmondi police station Sub-Inspector Md Monir Hossain, produced the youth, Md Ashraful, 23, before the court and requested a five-day remand.
The defence lawyer, however, appealed for bail and requested the court to cancel the remand prayer. After hearing both sides, the judge granted a three-day remand.
Ashraful was detained by police from the Dhanmondi area around midnight on Tuesday. Later, he was officially shown arrested in connection with the extortion case.
In the viral video circulated on social media platform Facebook, a young man in a white shirt is seen collecting money with a receipt.
During the incident, an argument breaks out between him and the car owner.
A person sitting inside the private car questions the youth about his aggressive behavior. In response, the youth says: “Yes, I’m doing it. Got a problem?”
When the car owner’s wife asks for his name, he replies: “What will you do with my name?”
According to the case statement, the video of the extortion incident from an unidentified private car went viral on Sunday. The incident stirred significant public reaction.
Based on sources, police learned that he had been extorting people for a long time. He later confessed to the allegations.
Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain of Dhanmondi police station filed a case against him under sections 385 and 386 of the Penal Code on Tuesday.
