The mananging director of e-commerce platform Evaly, Mohammad Rassel, and his wife Shamima Nasrin, the company’s chairperson, have each been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a fraud case.
The verdict was announced on Sunday by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate M Mizbah Ur Rahman.
In addition to the jail term, they have each been fined Tk5,000.
The plaintiff, Md Rajib, alleged in court that he suffered financial loss after being defrauded through Evaly.
He filed the case accusing the defendants of embezzling Tk1,237,500.
The verdict said that the accused violated public trust through fraudulent means, which is considered a serious offense.
Abdul Hannan Hridoy, the lawyer representing the plaintiff, expressed hope that this verdict would offer at least a sense of justice to the victims.
