A court has ordered five members of the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir to be sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over clashes with the police during its March for Khilafah program.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Wahiduzzaman issued the order on Sunday.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case presented the accused in court and requested a 10-day remand for each of them.
The court sent the accused to jail and scheduled the remand hearing for Thursday.
The accused are Masrafi Rahman Mahi, 20, Irfan Shahriar, 20, Md Saiful Islam,19, Md Anasur Rahman, 20, and Md Sohel Rana, 39.
On Saturday, the Dhaka Magistrate Court granted a five-day remand for 17 Hizb ut-Tahrir activists arrested following clashes with the police.
The previous day, on Friday, remand periods of two and one day were granted for three others.
According to the case details, on Friday afternoon, between 2,000 and 2,200 unidentified individuals, including members of the banned organization, organized a procession from the north gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
As they moved towards the Paltan intersection, police tried to stop them. Ignoring the police obstruction, they reached the intersection at 2:10pm, where they gathered on the paved road in front of L Mallik.
They carried flags, banners, and sticks while chanting slogans against the government and attempting to undermine the sovereignty of the country, the case alleges.
When the police on duty at the Paltan intersection tried to stop the procession, the protesters became aggressive and started throwing bricks and stones at the police.
To maintain law and order and protect lives and property, the police used gas guns and sound grenades to disperse the illegal procession.
However, the activists continued throwing bricks and stones at the police. Eventually, the accused were arrested.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Russel Mia filed the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Paltan police station.
