A Dhaka court on Monday acquitted Mahmudur Rahman, editor of "Amar Desh", in the case over an attempted abduction and murder plot against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Dhaka’s Fourth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Tariq Ejaz delivered the verdict.
Mahmudur Rahman was present in court as the verdict was announced.
His lawyer, Tanvir Ahmed Al-Amin, confirmed the matter.
On September 29 last year, Mahmudur Rahman surrendered before the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court and sought bail while filing his appeal.
However, the court rejected his plea and ordered him to be sent to jail.
After five days in prison, he was granted bail by the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court on October 3, 2024.
Mahmudur Rahman was convicted by the court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACCM) Asaduzzaman Noor on August 17, 2023.
Senior journalist Shafique Rehman, and Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskrit Sangtha leaders Mohammadullah, Rizvi Ahmed Sejar and Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan were also convicted in the same case.
The court handed down the verdict on the basis of false, fabricated, and baseless allegations in a farcical trial, advocate Mesbah said.
According to the case details, the accused persons held a meeting at home and abroad for kidnapping and killing Joy, the then ICT adviser to Sheikh Hasina in September 2011.
