The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered that a public notice be published in newspapers summoning Sajeeb Wazed Joy—son of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina—to appear in court in a case filed over crimes against humanity during the anti-discrimination student movement last year.

The co-accused in the case, former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak, is already in jail in connection with another case.

The order was issued on Wednesday by a two-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar.

During the hearing, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam represented the prosecution.

He briefed the tribunal on the progress of the arrest warrant issued against Joy. At this point, he sought permission to publish notices in two national dailies to summon the fugitive accused before the tribunal.

Following the submission, the tribunal granted permission for newspaper notices and fixed December 17 for the next hearing.

Earlier, lawyer Liton Ahmed represented Palak and told the court that jail authorities were not allowing Palak his weekly phone call with family members, nor were they permitting family visits once every 15 days. He sought the tribunal’s intervention on this matter.

On December 4, the tribunal formally accepted the charges against the two accused and issued an arrest warrant for Joy, setting today’s date for the hearing.
