Recruitment process for assistant teachers in primary schools suspended

The High Court issued a ruling after a preliminary hearing on a writ petition filed by 31 unsuccessful candidates challenging the recruitment process

The recruitment process for assistant teachers in government primary schools under the third phase in Dhaka and Chittagong divisions remains suspended following an order from the Appellate Division.

This includes the issuance of appointment letters, which will be on hold until further notice.

The Appellate Division directed the High Court to resolve the ruling related to the case by January 25.

The decision came after a hearing on Monday, where the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE) sought to overturn a prior High Court order suspending the recruitment process.

A three-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Justice Ashfaqul Islam, issued the directive.

On November 19, the High Court issued a ruling after a preliminary hearing on a writ petition filed by 31 unsuccessful candidates challenging the recruitment process.

The court suspended the results announced on October 31, the subsequent appointment decision of November 11, and halted the recruitment process for six months.

In response, the DPE filed a leave-to-appeal petition seeking a stay on the High Court's order. The appeal was heard by the Appellate Division on Monday, leading to its latest directive.

Following the hearing, Kamruzzaman Bhuiyan told Prothom Alo that the Appellate Division upheld the High Court's suspension of the recruitment process, instructing the High Court to settle the ruling by January 25.

Until then, no recruitment-related activities, including appointment letters, can proceed.

The recruitment circular for assistant teachers was published on June 14, 2023, with the final results of 6,531 candidates released on October 31.

Appointment letters were scheduled for issuance on November 20, as per a directive from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.

However, the writ petitioners claimed irregularities in the results, alleging that quotas were improperly followed during the recruitment process. This prompted the High Court to suspend the recruitment decision and issue a ruling asking why the October 31 results and November 11 appointment directive should not be declared void.

The matter will now be resolved in the High Court as per the Appellate Division's directive.
