A Dhaka court placed former state minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak on a three-day remand in connection with the murder of student Monir Mia in the capital’s Chankharpul area during mass uprising.
On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah issued the order.
Prior to this, Palak was presented in court by the police after being brought from jail. The investigating officer in the case, Sub-Inspector Sheikh Hadiuzzaman of Shahbagh police station, sought a seven-day remand. The defense lawyer appealed for bail and the cancellation of the remand, while the prosecution opposed the bail and argued in favor of the remand. After the hearing, the judge granted a three-day remand.
On the night of August 14, Zunaid Ahmed Palak was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) police while in hiding in the Nikunja residential area under Khilkhet Police Station. The next day, the court granted a 10-day remand. After several phases of remand in various cases, the court has once again granted a three-day remand.
According to the case details, during an anti-discrimination movement on August 5, Monir Mia, a student of Narayanganj’s Tolaram College, joined the protesters in the Chankharpul area. Around 12:30pm, he was injured by gunfire from the accused. After being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
Following this, the victim’s cousin filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station on October 2. In this case, Palak is listed as the second accused in the First Information Report (FIR).
