A sedition case has been filed against an Awami League leader of Jessore for allegedly making offensive comments about the prime minister.
Ansar Ali Bepari, president of a ward unit of the party, filed the case against Obaidur Rahman Khan, general secretary of the Dihi unit of the Awami League, with a Jessore court on Wednesday.
Judicial Magistrate Avantika Roy ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to submit a report after investigating the case.
The case documents say that in the recently held national election, Obaidur supported an independent candidate against the Awami League's candidate. He also made a seditious speech on Facebook from his home on January 7.
Obaidur in his speech reportedly said the prime minister is “wrecking the country” winning an election without voters.
He also asked for an election under a non-partisan government under the military. “The BNP and Jamaat do not participate in elections since they are held unfairly,” he added.
The plaintiff, Ansar Ali Bepari, was outraged by such accusations against the state, and when he went to the police station to register a complaint, the officers urged him to file a case in court.
