Pro-BNP lawyers move Dhaka court to press digital security charges against Murad Hassan

A forum of pro-BNP lawyers has filed a petition with a Dhaka court to press charges under the Digital Security Act against Murad Hassan for making untoward comments on former prime minister and BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s granddaughter.
Omar Faruq Faruqi, a leader of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum (BJAF), submitted the petition to the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal on Sunday to sue the former state minister and one Mohammad Mohiuddin Helal Nahid.
A hearing on the matter is likely to be held on Monday as the judge is on leave, said Md Masud Ahmed Talukdar of BJAF.
“Murad has made obscene remarks about Zaima Rahman [Khaleda’s granddaughter] and women in an interview on social media. We sought to press charges under sections 25, 29, and 31 of the Digital Security Act,” he said.
Murad reportedly shared the interview, taken by Nahid, who streamed it live on Facebook.
Amid mounting criticism against Murad for the remarks, an audio clip of a phone conversation began to circulate on social media, in which Murad was heard hurling abuses and threatening to rape actor Mahiya Mahi.
Murad stepped down as state minister for information and broadcasting on the prime minister’s order amid a whirlwind of controversy.
The Awami League also stripped the Jamalpur lawmaker from his posts in the party’s units.
On December 9, Murad took an Emirates Flight to Canada, but he was reportedly denied entry by the immigration authorities at the Toronto airport.
According to unconfirmed reports, he flew back to Dubai and caught a flight for Dhaka.
