A Satkhira court has awarded the death penalty to a man for murdering his wife eleven years ago.

On Sunday, Satkhira Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge MG Azam  delivered the verdict over the 2010 killing with the convict Sree Kartik Kumar Ghosh on the docks.

The convict was also fined Tk10,000 while the court acquitted five others as the charges against them were not proven beyond a reasonable doubt, said Special Public Prosecutor Jahirul Haider Babu.

According to the case statement, Ghosh married Shreepa Ghosh of Khulna in 2001. It was reported that Kartik often assaulted his wife for dowry.

On May 13, 2010, Shreepa’s mother was informed about his daughter’s death over a phone call. By midnight, she went to Shreepa’s house in the Patkelghata upazila of the district.

She found her daughter’s body lying on a balcony, and the body was covered in bruises.

On May 14, 2010, the victim’s mother filed a case against Kartik and five others with Patkelghata police station
