A Dhaka court on Sunday deferred the recording of testimonies till May 17 in a case filed against Hefazat-e-Islam Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque and 64 others over vandalism in the capital eight years ago.
Judge Fatema Imroz Khonika of the Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court deferred the trial proceedings following a time petition filed by the prosecution seeking an adjournment of the deposition of prosecution witnesses.
Additional public prosecutor SM Zahid Sardar said: “As the complainant of the case didn’t appear before the court, the prosecution filed for time petition.”
According to the case statement, on January 14, 2015, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists vandalized and set fire to a vehicle at Middle Pirerbag in Mirpur.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Khandaker Rajib Ahmed filed the case with the Mirpur police station against Mamunul Haque and 64 others under the Special Powers Act.
After investigations, police submitted two charge sheets – one under the Penal Code while another under the Explosive Substance Act – against 169 BNP leaders and activists on November 18, 2017.
On November 26, the court framed charges against the accused in the case.
