A Dhaka court on Thursday granted permanent bail to actor Rafiath Rashid Mithila in a case filed over fraud and embezzlement charges brought against her by a customer of controversial online marketplace Evaly.
Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rezaul Karim Chowdhury granted the bail after Mithila surrendered before the court and sought permanent bail in the case.
On December 13 last year, the High Court granted her anticipatory bail for eight weeks in the case.
On December 4 last year, one Saad Sam Rahman filed the case with Dhaka’s Dhanmondi police station against nine people including Mithila.
The other accused in the case are Evaly CEO Mohammad Rassel, Evaly Chairman Shamima Nasrin, musician Tahsan Khan, actor Shabnam Faria, Md Akash, Arif Hossain, Taher Mia, and Md Abu Taish Kayes.
Of them, Rassel and Shamima are now in jail custody in another case filed against them over a fraud charge.
Tahsan and Mithila were brand ambassadors of Evaly.
The plaintiff claimed that he had ordered products worth hundreds of thousands of Taka from Evaly, which were never delivered to him. Charges of aiding and abetting fraud have been brought against the actor in the case.
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Rassel and Shamima in September last year in connection with a lawsuit filed by a customer alleging fraud. They have been behind the bars since then.
Evaly became popular among a section of customers with lucrative offers on home appliances, TV, refrigerators, air-conditioners, washing machines, motorcycles, and other products.
Many of them used the discounts as an opportunity to earn extra money by reselling the products. They invested in reselling products purchased from Evaly by borrowing large sums of money or selling land and gold ornaments.
Evaly and its founder Rassel hit the spotlight in 2018 with giant billboards on highways. In the launching year it stunned the customers by offering a 16GB flash drive for only Tk10.
