A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced former deputy inspector general (DIG) of prisons Partha Gopal Banik to eight years in jail for bribery, amassing illegal wealth and abuse of office.

Judge Shaikh Nazmul Alam of the Dhaka’s Fourth Special Judges Court pronounced the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom.

The court, however, acquitted the suspended senior jail official from the money laundering charges in the same case. The court fined him Tk50,000, in default, to suffer three months more in jail.

The judge said the prosecution was able to prove the charges brought against the accused beyond any doubt.

According to the verdict, the court sentenced Partha Gopal Banik to three years of imprisonment under section 5 (2) of The Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 while it awarded five years imprisonment under section 27 (1) of Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004.

The court announced the punishments under two separate charges but both sentences will run concurrently, meaning that he will have to stay in prison for a total of five years.

The court found that out of the recovered Tk80 lakh from Partha’s residence, Tk65 lakh was amassed illegally while the rest was earned legally.

The court also asked the authorities concerned to confiscate the illegal amount in favour of the state while Tk 15 lakh will be handed over to the convict’s family.

Expressing satisfaction, ACC Public Prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol said they got justice in the case.

Defence lawyer Ehsanul Haque Shomaji, however, said they would challenge the verdict with the higher court.

On July 29, 2020, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Director Mohammad Yousuf quizzed Partha over allegations of irregularities and corruption as DIG (prisons) of Chittagong division.

They later detained Partha and showed him arrested after filing of the case with Kalabagan police on the same day.

The following day, Partha was sent to jail after he was produced before a Dhaka court.

On August 24 last year, the ACC Deputy Director Md Salauddin, also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet against Partha in the case.

On November 4 that year, the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court 10 framed charges against Partha and the formal trial started against the convict.
