HC accepts ACC's appeal against former DIG Mizan's acquittal

Mizanur was sentenced to three years in prison in a graft case on February 23

The High Court has accepted an appeal against the acquittal of suspended deputy inspector general of police Mizanur Rahman in a money laundering case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

A division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam and Justice

Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order on Sunday.

On February 23, Judge Sheikh Nazmul Alam of Dhaka Special Judge Court-four sentenced the former DIG to three years of imprisonment to Rahman in a graft case while he was acquitted in the money laundering case.

 Suspended director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Khandaker Enamul Bachir was sentenced to three years of imprisonment under section 161 of the Penal Code and sentenced to five-year imprisonment and fined Tk80 lakh under the money laundering prevention act. Both the sentences would run concurrently.

On April 7, the ACC appealed against Rahman's acquittal order.

Later, Mizanur appealed to the High Court against the sentence.

The High Court has accepted his appeal for hearing and fixed April 13 for the

hearing of his bail application.

On July 16, 2019, ACC Director and search team leader Sheikh Md Fanafillah filed the case against Mizanur and Bachir at the ACC Dhaka-one integrated district office under the Money Laundering Act.
