The High Court has stayed the decision to cancel the candidacy of actor Zayed Khan in the Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association elections.
On Monday, the bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman stayed the election appellate board’s decision after hearing a petition by the actor.
The court also issued a rule asking why the board’s decision would not be declared illegal and gave the respondents a week to come up with explanations.
“The High Court has given an order in my favour. I am the elected general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artistes’ association,” in an instant reaction Zayed Khan told an online newspaper.
On February 5, the election appellate board disqualified Zayed’s candidacy and declared Nipun as the newly elected general secretary on allegations of not adhering to electoral code of conduct.
The board also announced the disqualification of executive panel member Chunnu.
In a media call on Saturday, the appellate board chief Sohanur Rahman Sohan said that it has been proven Zayed Khan was involved in bribing voters leading to his disqualification.
Nipun accused her opponent Zayed Khan of 'buying' voters and colluding with BFDC MD Nuzhat Yeasmin and Election Commissioner Pirzada Harun after the elections on January 28.
The actor lodged a written complaint towards the chairman of the appellate board, asking for the disqualification of both Zayed Khan and Chunnu.
