SC: Nipun general secretary of film artistes' association for now

At the same time, Nipun’s leave to appeal was granted

Update : 21 Nov 2022, 12:55 PM

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Monday gave its nod to actor Nipun Akhter to perform the duties of general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association (BFAA).

The Appellate Division stayed the High Court's verdict declaring Zayed Khan's candidature for the post of general secretary valid in the election of BFAA.

At the same time, the court granted Nipun's leave to appeal petition against the High Court verdict.

As a result, there are no obstacles in Nipun performing her duties as the general secretary for the time being, the lawyers said.

The Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order on Monday.

Advocates Ahsanul Karim and Nahid Sultana Juthi were present in the hearing on behalf of Zayed Khan. On the other hand, Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud applied for time on Nipun's behalf.

Earlier on March 13, the Appellate Division ordered both artists to strictly comply with the status quo over holding the post ordered by the Chamber Court.

Before that, Zayed Khan filed a contempt of court on March 8 against Nipun Akter, who attained the General Secretary position despite the status quo order by the High Court.

Bangladesh Film Artistes'Assosiation election was held on January 28 where Zayed was elected as the General Secretary post in a close contest. But the election appellate board disqualified Zayed's candidacy as Nipun accused him of "buying votes."

In spite of being the focus of attention throughout the year, the Nipun-Zayed controversy is yet to resolve till November 20.
