Police charge BB official in mountaineer Ratna hit-and-run case

Ratna was crushed under the wheels of a car while cycling on August 7

Police on Tuesday submitted a charge sheet against SM Darus Salam, deputy director of Bangladesh Bank (BB), in a case filed over the murder of mountaineer Reshma Nahar Ratna in a hit-and-run incident near parliament on August 7.

After completing the investigation, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mubarak Ali, the investigation officer of the case, pressed charges against the lone accused at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court.

Sub inspector Md Ashaduzzaman, general recording officer (GRO) of CMM court, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

“Twenty names are mentioned in the charge sheet as prosecution witnesses, including the complainant in the case,” he added.

On August 7, Reshma Nahar Ratna, 33, was crushed under the wheels of a car while cycling on Crescent Lake Road near the parliament building in Dhaka.

The mountaineer, who was also a teacher at Ayub Ali Government Primary School located near Dhaka’s New Market, was buried at her village in Lohagara, Narail, on August 8.

Reshma's brother-in-law, Md Monir Hossain, filed a case regarding Reshma’s death with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on the day of the incident.

Monir said Reshma had been a vocal proponent of road safety on social media and rode a bicycle as it was pollution-free.
