Rifat murder: HC accepts Minni's appeal petition, suspends fine

On September 30, a Barguna court handed down capital punishment to Minni and five others in the murder case

The High Court has accepted an appeal petition for hearing. The appeal was filed by Ayesha Siddiqua Minni challenging the lower court's verdict sentencing her and five others to death for the murder of her husband Rifat Sharif in Barguna.

The trial court in the district also fined the convicts Tk50,000 each.

Accepting the petition for hearing, the High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman on Wednesday also suspended Minni's fine in this regard. 

Advocate ZI Khan Panna, accompanied by Makkia Fatema Islam, will argue for the convict during the hearing, the date of which has yet to be set.

Earlier on October 6, Minni filed the appeal with the High Court Division challenging the death sentence and seeking her acquittal in the murder case.

On September 30, the Barguna District and Sessions Judges' Court handed down capital punishment to six people in its judgement on 10 adult accused in the sensational murder case.

The convicts are -- Minni, 19, Rakibul Hasan alias Rifat Faraji, 23, Al Kaiyum alias Rabbi Akan, 21, Mohaiminul Islam Sifat, 19, Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktok Hridoy, 22, and Md Hasan, 19.

Four other accused -- Md Musa, 22, currently on the run, Rafiul Islam Rabbi, 20, Md Sagar, 19, and Kamrul Hasan Saymun, 21 -- were acquitted of the charges.

On June 26, 2019, 22-year-old Rifat Sharif was mercilessly hacked by a group of assailants in broad daylight in front of Barguna Government College.

He died from his injuries at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital in Barisal later that evening. 

The next day, Rifat's father filed a murder case at Sadar police station.

Sabbir Ahmed Nayan alias Nayan Bond, the prime accused in the case, was killed in a reported gunfight with the police on July 2, 2019.

On September 1 that year, police submitted two separate charge sheets against 10 adults and 14 minors.

On January 8, 2020, another Barguna court framed charges against 14 juvenile accused.

On October 27, the Barguna Juvenile Court jailed 11 accused on different terms and acquitted three others of the charges.
