Shahed confesses to crimes before court

Update : 26 Jul 2020, 09:06 PM

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Regent Hospital Chairman Md Shahed Karim on a fresh 28-day remand for interrogation in four fraud cases.

Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury passed the order after police produced Shahed in court seeking a total of 40 days of remand in the four cases.

The court also placed Regent Hospital Managing Director (MD) Masud Parvez on a 21 day remand for interrogation in three cases.

Shahed was also shown arrested in two arms cases filed with Uttara Paschim Police Station. The court gave the order after two investigation officers (IOs) submitted petitions for his arrest in the cases.

During the hearing, Shahed admitted to his crimes in court.

“Sir I have committed crimes and I was involved with the crimes. I will gradually refund money to everyone soon, after businesses resume and normalcy returns to the country,” he said.

Saying he has been sick and on remand for the last few days, Shahed also urged the court to hold his remand hearing after Eid.

Opposing the remand petitions, defence lawyers submitted petitions to the court, seeking bail for the accused in the cases. However, the court rejected the bail pleas.

Police had produced the accused Shahed and Masud in court on completion of their 10 day remand in a case filed for issuing fake Covid-19 results and charging patients for tests and treatment.

Of the four cases against Shahed, three were filed with Uttara West Police Station and one with Uttara East Police Station. Of the three cases filed against Masud Pervez, two were filed with Uttara West police station and one with Uttara East police station.

Earlier, a Dhaka court on July 16 placed Shahed and Masud Parvez on a 10 day remand for each, in a case lodged with Uttara West police station over the Regent Hospital scam.

On July 15, law enforcement arrested Shahed from Satkhira while he was trying to leave the country. Masud Parvez was arrested from Gazipur on July 14.

In the early hours of July 8, Rab-1 filed a case with Uttara Paschim Police Station against Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed, Md Masud Parvez, and 15 others, on charges of forgery at the hospital.

After the incident, the government sealed off the head office and other branches of the private hospital.
