3,447 granted bail on 5th day of virtual court proceedings

Virtual hearings of 4,664 cases were conducted in lower courts across the country

3,447  people were granted bail across Bangladesh on the fifth day of virtual court proceedings on Sunday.

According to Supreme Court sources, a total of 12 petitions were put up with the bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan.

370 cases were put up and 21 were disposed of by the bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain.

34 cases were put up and 10 cases disposed, by the bench of Justice JBM Hasan, and 1 new case was put up before the bench of Justice Khurshid Alam.

Virtual hearings of 4,664 cases were conducted in lower courts across the country.

542 people were granted bail in the lower courts in Dhaka division, with hearings on 852 cases conducted online.

In Chittagong division, 631 people were granted bail in 889 virtual hearings.

In Rangpur division, 342 people were granted bail in 435 virtual hearings.

In Barisal division, 170 people were granted bail with hearings on 362 petitions conducted online.

In Rajshahi division, 312 people were granted bail with 483 petition hearings conducted.

In Khulna division, hearings of 590 petitions were conducted online and 718 people were granted bail.

In Sylhet division, 355 people obtained bail in 407 cases of virtual hearings.

In Mymensingh division, 338 people were granted bail in 434 hearings by virtual courts.

Last week a total of 2,978 people were granted bail in virtual courts across the country. 

Earlier on April 10, the chief justice issued directives and a user manual in line with the ordinance issued by President Md Abdul Hamid on Saturday, allowing regular court proceedings virtually during the Covid-19 lockdown in Bangladesh.

By Sunday, Bangladesh confirmed 22,268 coronavirus cases with the death toll rising to 328 after 14 new fatalities were reported.

Till now the fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 313,000 lives and infected more than 4,750,000 people globally, according to Worldometer.

As many as 1,830,526 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 210 countries and territories across the world.
