A Dhaka court has set November 25 for the investigation officer (IO) to submit the probe report in a case lodged over the brutal killing of Taslima Begum Renu in a mob beating in North Badda area in the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jasim Uddin passed the order on Sunday, as the IO failed to submit the report on the scheduled date (Sunday), reports BSS.
On July 20, Renu, 40, a single-mother of two, was beaten to death by a mob on unfounded suspicions of being a kidnapper, in front of North Badda Government Primary School.
It was later learned that Renu merely went there to collect information regarding the admission procedure of that school, for her daughter Tahsin Tuba, 4.
Renu’s nephew Nasir Uddin filed the case with Badda police station against 400-500 unidentified people.
After scrutinizing the gruesome video clippings of the incident, police managed to arrest almost all the culprits, including Ria Khatun, 35, who started the ruckus by terming Renu a kidnapper, and Ibrahim Hossain Hridoy, the man who was seen most active while mercilessly beating Renu, even thrashing her seemingly lifeless body.
On August 27, the High Court issued a rule asking the government to explain why Tk1 crore compensation should not be given to the family of Renu.
The bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Asraful Kamal issued the rule after hearing a writ petition in this regard.
The court also asked 12 people, including the secretaries of home and education ministries, Inspector General of Police (IGP) and DMP commissioner, to respond to the rule within four weeks.
The same bench also gave an order to the home secretary and the IGP to inform the court within November 28, regarding actions taken to prevent deaths of innocent people in lynching incident across Bangladesh.
