A case has been filed in connection with the public assault of two young women on a launch docked at the Munshiganj terminal.
On Sunday morning, Muktarpur Naval Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Milon lodged the complaint at the Munshiganj Sadar police station.
The case names Nehal Ahmed, also known as Jihad, as a prime accused, along with 20–25 unidentified individuals.
It has been filed under Section 10 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, with charges including sexual harassment, unlawful assembly, trespassing, physical assault, vandalism, property damage, and issuing threats.
Nehal Ahmed has been officially shown as arrested. He had arrived at the police station voluntarily on Saturday afternoon, after which he was taken into custody. Nehal is a resident of the Jogonighat area in Munshiganj Sadar upazila.
Confirming the development, Munshiganj Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam told Prothom Alo around 11:45am Sunday that a video showing the assault of the two women went viral on Friday.
“We called Jihad to the station on Saturday and detained him upon his arrival. The victims were requested to file a complaint but did not come forward. We also asked the launch authorities to lodge a complaint, but they did not respond either,” said the OC.
As no formal complaint came from the victims or the launch authorities, the Naval Police filed the case themselves on Sunday, citing assault, vandalism, and looting aboard the vessel. The investigation will be led by the Naval Police, and steps are underway to present Nehal Ahmed in court.
The viral video, circulating widely on Facebook, shows a young man beating two women with a belt on the front deck of a launch named MV Captain, while onlookers record the incident on their phones and cheer with chants and slogans.
