Pro-BNP lawyers: Fix corruption in judiciary

They announce protest events on August 28 at all district bar associations

Update : 26 Aug 2019, 11:15 PM

The Jatiya Ainjibi Oikya Front, a pro-BNP lawyers’ platform yesterday demanded the authorities make clear, the allegations against three High Court judges who have been asked to refrain from discharging their judicial responsibilities.

Convener of the platform, Advocate Zainul Abedin, in a written statement, urged the law minister and the attorney general to take steps through the Supreme Judicial Council against all kinds of corruption and irregularities in the judicial branch of government.

He said that both financial matters and the failure of judges to discharge their constitutional obligation are to be deemed corruption.

Advocate Abedin said if judges follow government directives and deliver premeditated and prescribed judgments violating their constitutional oath, this also is a pattern of corruption.

At the press conference held at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) auditorium on Monday, Advocate Zainul Abedin said the allegations against three judges are not clear and the authorities concerned are not clarifying matters, which is unfortunate.

“Three (High Court) judges have recently been suspended from discharging judicial responsibilities. It is not clear what the allegation is against them. Are they financially corrupt or otherwise? We don’t know. The top law officer of the country and the law minister are not clearing the matter which is regrettable,” Advocate Zainul Abedin said.

Highlighting that the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court restored the Supreme Judicial Council, he therefore demanded immediate action on creating a guideline for the appointment of honourable judges to the High Court division.

He demanded the judiciary be made free of corruption.

The pro-BNP platform also announced the forming of a human chain at all  district bar association premises across the country on August 28, demanding action against corruption and nepotism in appointing judges.
