A Dhaka court has sentenced two people to life imprisonment, in a case lodged over the murder of a Sri Lankan citizen in Dhaka in 2004.

Dhaka Special Judge Court-9 Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman passed the order on Wednesday, sentencing Mofiz Uddin Sarker alias Mofiz and Abu Zaher alias Zaher Khan to life imprisonment, and fined them Tk30,000 each.

The court also acquitted another accused, Abul Hossain, as the charges brought against him could not be proved.

According to the case documents, Bangladeshi expatriate Jahirul Islam married Sri Lankan citizen Suhara Umma in Kuwait, and they started living in Shaympur, Dhaka with their son.

On January 27, 2004, Jahirul’s tenant Abul Hossain’s brother-in-law Mofiz and his friend Zaher broke into Umma’s flat and strangled her to death.

Umma’s brother-in-law Abbas Ali filed the case with Shyampur Police Station the day after the murder. Police later filed charge sheet against three.

The court came up with the judgement after examining 12 of the 22 witnesses.
