The High Court has ordered Green Line Paribahan to pay the remainder of the Tk45 lakh compensation to Rasel—who lost his leg in an accident last year—in monthly instalments.
The bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and KM Kamrul Kader gave the order on Tuesday, after denying Green Line's request to decrease the compensation amount at a hearing.
The court, however, allowed the transport company to pay the compensation in instalments of Tk5 lakh to Rasel, by the seventh of every month, until the whole amount is paid. The company must also inform the High Court of the payment by the 15th of every month.
Lawyer Uziullah represented Green Line, while Khandaker Shamsul Haque Reza represented Rasel. Deputy Attorney General ABM Abdullah Al Mahmud Bashar represented the state.
Rasel and his family were also present at the hearing.
On May 15, Green Line informed the High Court that it had paid Tk5 lakh of the total amount to Rasel and his family. However, despite giving a month to Green Line to pay the rest of the amount, the company failed to pay it, resulting in Tuesday's hearing.
On April 28 last year, a luxury Green Line coach rear-ended the car Rasel was driving. The accident occurred on the slope of Mayor Md Hanif Flyover in Dholaipar, and caused Rasel to step outside of his car to assess the damage.
Although he signaled the bus not to drive away, bus driver Kabir Hossain, in his attempt to flee the scene, ran Rasel over, severing his left leg from the thigh down in the process.
Police responded to the scene, impounded the bus, and detained Kabir from near the National Press Club.
