Shahinur, from the Sonagazi area of the Raozan upazila in Chittagong, claimed to be married to Salahuddin, from the Patarirhat area. However, in the two years of the supposed marriage, she never set foot in his house in Lakshmipur.
On Friday, she decided to come to Salahuddin’s house, only to find out that he has been living with another woman as his wife, and two children. When she confronted him, he denied he was married to Shahinur. For two days she stayed in the area, trying to get justice and recognition.
On Sunday, Salahuddin took her to an empty field near his house, and reportedly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire.
She died the next day, while undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, after sustaining around 40% burn injuries.
