A Chittagong court on Friday placed five teachers on a three-day remand trial, in a case filed for the death of a madrasa student.

Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Sarwar Jahan placed Principal Abu Darda Khan, Tarequr Rahman, Ansar Ali, Md Jubayer, and Abdus Samad, on a three-day remand, after a hearing for five days.

The deceased, 12-year-old Habibur Rahman, student of Omar Faruk al-Islamia Madrasa and Orphanage in the Bayazid area, was found hanging from the bars of a window at the madrasa’s mosque on Wednesday.

The victim’s father, Anisur Rahman, filed a case with Bayazid police station on Friday, accusing Abu Darda Khan, the principal, and Md Tarekur Rahman, a teacher, and seven others.

Police arrested five madrasa teachers, including the principal, after conducting drives in different areas of the port city on Friday.

Talking to reporters in front of the Chittagong Medical College Hospital morgue, the boy's father said his son returned home four days ago as Tarek Ahmed, a madrasa teacher, had allegedly tortured him. But he sent  his son back to the madrasa the next day.

On Wednesday evening, around 7pm, he received a phone call from the madrasa, informing him that his son was missing, Anisur Rahman said.

Around 9pm that night, he received another call saying the boy had committed suicide by hanging himself from a window grille.

“The teachers killed my son and staged the murder as suicide,” alleged Anisur.

However, denying the allegation, teacher Tarek Ahmed said that Habibur was seen playing in the field till evening and he went missing after Maghrib prayers. Later, they found his body hanging from a grill.
