A district court has sentenced six people to life imprisonment in a case filed over the murder of a farmer, Toton Mia, in Habiganj, 14 years ago.

Judge SM Nasim Reza of Habiganj additional district and sessions judge's court passed the order on Monday at noon.

The court also fined the convicts Tk10,000 each, in default, six more months of a jail term.

The convicts are: Meshahid, son of Safar Ali of Jalsukha village in Ajmiriganj upazila; Mohan Mia, son of Shamsul Haq of the same village; Ziaur Rahman, son of Alam Moula of Baghhati village of the same upazila; Wahab Ullah, son of Rahman Ullah of Atpara village; Chan Mia, son of Abul Hossain of Modhyapara area; and Dilu Mia, son of Binon Mia of Mirka village.

Confirming the matter, Habiganj Court Inspector Md Al Amin said: "On October 30, 2005, the convicts hired Toton Mia as a cook and took him to a remote water reservoir where they had been conducting a fishing expedition. Later in the afternoon, they slaughtered Toton and dumped his body in water."

Following the incident, victim's wife Anwara Akhter filed a murder case with Ajmiriganj police station accusing 20 people.

After the investigation, Shyamol Kanti, officer-in-charge (OC) of the station, submitted the charge sheet against the 20 people in court on March 19 in 2006.

After concluding a lengthy trial, the court acquitted 14 of the accused as the prosecution failed to produce enough evidence against them.
