A Chittagong tribunal on Tuesday framed charges against three people – the driver, helper, and supervisor of a Hanif Paribahan bus – for killing North South University student Saidur Rahman Payel in 2018.
Acting Judge of Chittagong Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Abdul Halim fixed also April 8 for the next hearing.
The accused are bus driver Jamal Hossain, his assistant Foysal Hossain, and supervisor Jony.
On July 22, last year, Payel, a 5th semester NSU student of Halishahar in the port city of Chittagong, was found dead in a canal at Bhaber Char area in Munshiganj’s Gazaria upazila.
Payel was returning to Dhaka from Chittagong on July 21, on a Hanif Paribahan bus, with friends. According to police, the bus got stuck in a traffic jam in Munshiganj’s Gazaria around 4am on July 22.

After some time, Payel disembarked to relieve himself. When the gridlock eased, he rushed back to get on. At that moment, he was hit by the bus and lost consciousness.
The driver, his assistant, and supervisor threw Payel into the river— presuming that he was dead. Police recovered his body on July 23.
On July 24, police arrested the supervisor from Motijheel and the driver and its helper from Dhaka's Arambagh areas of the capital.
On March 25, this year, Jonny, the supervisor of the bus gave a bone-chilling narration of the incident before a court where he confessed to his involvement in the killing of the private university student.
A case was filed accusing the three with Gazaria police station on March 24.
