The High Court granted bail to BNP leader Khairul Kabir Khokon on Sunday over a subversive case filed against him on February 8, 2018, said his lawyer advocate Joynal Abedin.
After receiving the documents from the HC, the Narsingdi court freed him on Monday morning, he said.
Khokon's wife Shirin Sultana, also the general secretary of the BNP's women's wing Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal, said two cases were filed against Khokon.
One was filed with the Narsingdi Model police station on charge of his involvement in subversive activities while another was filed with the same police station two months later under the Explosive Substances Act.
A court in Narsingdi sent Khokon to jail in the case filed under the Special Power Act.
Narsingdi district and sessions judge Mohammad Atabullah passed the order as Khokon appeared before the court seeking bail in two cases.
Khokon was the BNP’s pick to contest the 11th parliamentary election, from the Narsingdi-1 (Sadar upazila) constituency.
Khokon’s lawyer Abdul Baset said, “On February 8, police filed the case naming 27 people. It, however, did not name Khokon, who is BNP’s joint secretary general and Narsingdi district BNP unit president.
“But, police pressed charges against 273 people including Khokon in the case on November, 25.
Three people including Khokon surrendered before the court and sought bail, which the court denied and they were sent to jail,” Baset said.
The lawyer, however, termed the move politically motivated.
“He was named nowhere in the case statement. The court denied bail so he can’t contest the polls,” said Baset.
