A Dhaka Court on Sunday extended the bail of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia till October 14 in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Judge’s Court 5 passed the order after hearing her bail extension plea filed by Khaleda’s lawyer, reports UNB.
Her lawyers also responded to a show-cause notice issued by the court on September 30, which had sought explanation as to why her bail would not be declared illegal in the case.
The BNP chief is currently undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Hospital in the city, following a High Court order. The government has also formed a special medical board for her treatment.
Khaleda is serving five years' rigorous imprisonment in the old central jail, after her conviction in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on February 8.
On August 8, 2011, the Anti-Corruption Commission had filed the Zia Charitable Trust case with the Tejgaon police station accusing four people, including Khaleda, of abusing power in raising funds for the trust from unknown sources.
