The Supreme Court has set October 1 as the date for hearing two petitions filed by the government, seeking a stay on the High Court order granting bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in two defamation cases.
On Thursday, Deputy Attorney General Kamrul Ahsan Khan Aslam said the full bench of the apex court will hear the petitions on the cases filed in Dhaka and Narail, reports UNB.
After review and hearing, Chamber judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, sent the petitions to the full bench for their hearing on October 1.
Earlier, on August 19, the government filed two petitions that sought a stay on the High Court's orders that granted bail on August 13 to the BNP chairperson in the Narail defamation case, and for the Dhaka case, on August 14.
On December 21, 2015, Khaleda Zia raised questions about the actual number of martyrs in the Liberation War of 1971 during a discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.
She said there have been controversies over the real number of martyrs, and that there are "many books and documents that back the controversies."
In reaction to her comment, Raihan Farooque Imam of Naragati filed a case with the Cognizance Court in Narail on December 24, 2015.
Other than that, AB Siddique, president of pro-Awami League organization Jananetri Parishad, lodged another defamation case against Khaleda with a Dhaka court on January 5, 2016.
