SC defers hearing on Gazipur city polls stay order for a day

On Sunday, the High Court postponed the Gazipur City Corporation election for three months, an election that was scheduled for May 15

The Supreme Court has deferred to Thursday, the hearing on the appeal petitions challenging the High Court order which postponed the Gazipur City Corporation elections for three months.

The four-member Appellate Division bench, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, took the decision on Wednesday following an Election Commission (EC) request, since the EC will file another appeal petition challenging the stay order.

On Tuesday, the EC decided to move the Appellate Division against the High Court order at a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda. EC counsel Obaidur Rahman Mostafa said they would file yet another petition with the Appellate Division on Wednesday.

Earlier, Jahangir Alam and Hasan Uddin Sarkar, mayoral candidates of the Awami League and BNP, also petitioned the court to move against the High Court’s stay order.

On Sunday, the High Court postponed the Gazipur City Corporation election for three months, an election that was scheduled for May 15.

The very next day, BNP candidate Hasan filed a petition with the Appellate Division against the stay order. The day after, on Tuesday, Awami League candidate Jahangir filed a similar petition.

Appellate Division Chamber Judge, Justice Hasan Foyez Siddique, sent the petitions to the full-bench after hearing them.
