Hearing on Khaleda’s bail plea adjourned

Update : 08 May 2018, 09:02 PM
The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on the leave-to-appeal petitions filed challenging BNP chief Khaleda Zia's bail which the High Court granted her in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. The hearing has been adjourned until Wednesday. The four-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, passed the order on Tuesday. At the hearing in the morning, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer, Khurshid Alam Khan, and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, placed arguments against Khaleda's bail.  The imprisoned BNP chairperson's lawyer, AJ Mohammad Ali, argued on behalf of his client. AJ Mohammad Ali could not complete his arguments and will resume them on Wednesday before the court rules on the petitions. On March 19, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed Khaleda’s bail till May 8 in the graft case in which she was convicted by the lower court and sent to jail. The Supreme Court also allowed the State and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to file petitions against the High Court order that granted bail to Khaleda. On February 8, the Dhaka Special Court 5 convicted the former prime minister and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the graft case. She was then sent to the old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in Dhaka. She secured four months' bail from the High Court in the case on March 12. On March 15, the ACC and the State filed two leave-to-appeal petitions before the Appellate Division challenging the bail. Later, the Appellate Division stayed Khaleda Zia's bail till May 8 in the case. On May 5, Khaleda Zia asked her lawyers to bring the matter of her “serious illness” to the notice of the Supreme Court during the hearing on her bail.
