Three officials of the Bangladesh Railway, including its former east zone general manager Yousuf Ali Mridha, have been sentenced to four-year imprisonment for corruption in the railway's recruitment.
Chittagong Divisional Special Judge Mir Ruhul Amin delivered the verdict in two cases on Thursday.
The court also imposed a Tk10,000 fine each on Mridha, senior welfare officer Golam Kibria and additional chief mechanical engineer Hafizur Rahman.
They will have to serve three more months in jail if they fail to pay the fine.
Five others, who had taken part in the recruitment tests, were cleared of charges.
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the two cases with kotwali police on September 10 and September 13, 2012, accusing the former railway officials of irregularities when recruiting for the post of Fuel Checker and ticket issuer.
The ACC filed charge sheet against Mridha, Kibria and Hafizur, along with two examinees for the post of Fuel Checker, the next year.
Mridha, Kibria and Hafizur were accused in the second case.
Mridha, along with several other railway officials and job seekers, were accused in 14 cases by the ACC between 2010 and 2012 for corruption in recruiting staff for different posts.
