The principal of Dhaka Alia Madrasa and nine others were injured after activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) clashed on Tuesday afternoon over a dispute involving dormitory seats.
The violence erupted outside the campus, where activists from both groups exchanged brickbats and engaged in several rounds of chases and counter-chases, according to witnesses and campus sources.
Among the injured was the madrasa's principal Mahmud Obaidul Haque, 52, who was rescued by teachers and students and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 5:00pm. He is currently undergoing treatment in Ward No 4.
Also injured were Shamim Mahmud, 30, president of JCD's Dhaka South unit; Sanaullah, 30, former senior joint convener of the Government Alia Madrasa unit of JCD; and Nesar Uddin Rabbi, 27, member secretary of Lalbagh Thana JCD. They were later taken to DMCH for treatment.
Sabbir Rahman, who accompanied the injured to the hospital, confirmed their identities.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police camp, confirmed that the injured are receiving treatment at the hospital.
Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control, though tension continued to prevail in the area.
Shibir alleged that its activists were attacked after protesting what it described as the illegal occupation of dormitory seats.
JCD, however, claimed that Shibir was deliberately trying to destabilise educational institutions through planned violence.
As of 6:00pm, when this report was filed, the clashes had subsided, but the campus remained tense. Additional police personnel were deployed, and law enforcement agencies continued to monitor the situation.
Chawkbazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mamun said the clash occurred outside the campus between activists of JCD and Shibir, leaving several members of both groups injured.
"The situation is now under control, and police have been deployed in the area," he said.
Meanwhile, separate clashes between activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and JCD also broke out at Jagannath University and Dhaka College on Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over security at educational institutions across the capital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Osman Gani told DhakaTribune that clashes had occurred at all three campuses.
"Police intervened and brought the situations under control. The situation is now normal, and additional personnel have been deployed on the campuses," he said.
