The High Court has deferred the hearing on the bail petition by BNP-backed mayoral candidate Mirza Abbas in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan deferred the hearing till April 27.
Earlier in the day, Abbas' counsel Joynul Abedin filed a time petition mentioning that the HC passed a split order on the bail petitions of Abbas in two cases.
He said: "As the chief justice is yet to form a single bench to hear the pleas, we sought seven more days for hearing the bail petition of the BNP leader in the graft case."
The ACC said the commission filed the case with Shahbagh police on March 6 last year against BNP leader Alamgir Kabir, Mirza Abbas, and two others on charge of causing a loss of around Tk15.52 crore to the state by allocating land to journalists at a lower rate.
Abbas sought bail in the case as police had pressed charges against him along with the other accused. Abbas apprehended that he might be arrested in the case.
Earlier, Abbas had prayed to the HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore to hear the bail petition but the bench on April 13 dropped it from the hearing list, saying there is a specific bench for hearing the petitions regarding corruption cases.
Later his counsels prayed to the bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan which deals with graft cases.
