Update : 04 Apr 2015, 10:54 AM

The lawyers of condemned war criminal Mohammad Kamaruzzaman have met him at Dhaka Central Jail on Saturday afternoon, reported BSS.

The meeting took place a day ahead the hearing on a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leader, seeking review of the top court’s verdict that upheld his death sentence given by a war crimes tribunal.

The lawyers are—Advocate Shishir Mohammad Manir, Barrister Ehsan-e-Siddique, Advocate Moshiul Alam, Advocate Motiur Rahman Akand, and Advocate Mujahidul Islam Shahin.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Shishir Mohammad Manir, counsel for the death-row convict, said: “We met him for discussing leagal issues.”

Earlier on Wednesday, responding to a time plea, a four-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha, fixed April 5 for hearing the petition.

On Tuesday, Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers submitted the time plea saying that Khandker Mahbub, also an adviser to the BNP chief, was physically ill and had been advised by his doctor to take rest.

Kamaruzzaman’s lawyers filed the petition on March 5 seeking review of the death penalty upheld by the Appellate Division on November 3 last year.

The full text of the Appellate Division judgement was released on February 18 and the International Crimes Tribunal the following day issued a warrant to execute the death sentence.

Earlier on February 28, the last meeting between the death row war criminal and his family members and lawyers took place. Before that, they also met on January 29.

On February 19, prison authorities read out the death warrant to Kamaruzzaman immediately after International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued it.

On February 18, the Supreme Court released the full text of the verdict against the war criminal.

On November 3, 2014, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court upheld the tribunal verdict that had awarded death sentence to the Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.

M Kamaruzzaman was shifted to Dhaka Central Jail from Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur after the SC upheld his death penalty.
