1st National Law Students’ Conference kicks off

Update : 27 Feb 2015, 07:32 PM

The first National Law Students’ Conference 2015 began yesterday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University.

The two-day conference was participated by around 100 law students from about 23 law schools in the country as well as student leaders and organisations from the South Asian region to discuss issues on friendship, cross-border networking and regional cooperation.

The conference was organised to promote and discuss contemporary legal issues, figuring out challenges and prospects for legal education in South Asia, and creating avenues for empowerment and development of law students through service-oriented careers in the legal profession.

Justice Md Rezaul Hasan, a sitting judge at the High Court who was present as the chief guest, opened the conference yesterday. Professor Dr Begum Asma Siddiqua, former chairperson of the Department of Law at Rajshahi University, and Professor Dr Borhan Uddin Khan, former chairperson and dean of the Faculty of Law at Dhaka University, were present as special guests.

In his keynote speech, Professor Dr Asif Nazrul said Bangladeshi people love to talk about constitution but do not believe in its true spirit.

“Our political parties have amended the constitution at their whim with a view to clinging to power. While India and Pakistan have made some significant amendments to their constitutions such as elevating the status of the right to education (RTE) as an enforceable fundamental right from a non-enforceable social and economic right, we have deliberately closed the doors to bring about such changes in our constitution,” he added.

Louis Vanegas, chief technical adviser of the Better Work programme of International Labour Organisation in Bangladesh, explored a range of issues such as importance of maintaining proper working conditions in his speech.
