Crops on 500 acres of land submerged

Boro crops on 500 acres of land are under the risk of damage for lack of irrigation as some miscreants demolished two dams in Naikkhongchhari upazila of Bandarban district on Sunday.

Local sources said. on Sunday early morning, a group of miscreants broke two dams built on two canals in Chak Headmenpara and Rajghat areas in Baishari union of the upazila.

If the dams are not rebuilt immediately, a number of farmers might face severe hardship as the season for cultivating Boro crops has just started.

Moreover, the dam was used by residents of five villages in Baishari for communication.

Md Yusuf Dealer, a local farmer, said if irrigation water was not arranged through an alternative meanswithin two weeks, crops on 500 acres of land would die.

Former member of Baishari Union Parishad Mohammed Shafi said the water from the canals had already washed away the road and lands in front of his house, and he feared his homestead might get submerged at any time.

Nurul Hakim, a member of the Irrigation Dam Committee, said the dams were built with millions of takas, but now, if an alternate source of water is not arranged quickly, the farmers might incurr losses in crores.

Locals urged the Bandarban Hill District Parishad, Parbatya Chittagong Development Board, and the government to repair the dams immediately.

Baishari Union Parishad Chairman Monowarul Hoque Monu said senior uthorities had been informed about the matter.
