Visiting West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has paid homage to the martyrs of historic language movement by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar here at 00.07 hours past Friday midnight.
Mamata along with the members of her entourage arrived on Shaheed Minar premises at 11:45pm on Friday, a few minutes before the arrival of President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the venue.
On her arrival at the Shaheed Minar, she was received by Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique.
The West Bengal Chief Minister then proceeded towards the altar of the Central Shaheed Minar in slow pace when the immortal song "Amar Bhaiyer Raktey Rangano Ekushey February, Ami Ki Bhulitey Pari" was playing in loud speakers.
Later, she placed the wreath at the altar of the Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the language movement martyrs, who sacrificed their lives for the cause of their mother tongue in 1952.
She placed wreath at the altar of Shaheed Minar after President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury and House of Lords Speaker Baroness D' Souza.
The West Bengal Chief Minister arrived here last night on a three-day visit at the invitation of Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali to join the International Mother Language Day programmes as a guest of honour.
