India’s BSF shoots dead Bangladeshi farmer, detains six others

BSF members shot dead a Bangladeshi farmer, injured another man in the same incident and detained six others in border areas in several districts in the last two days.

They also detained a drug peddler but later handed him over to the BGB.

The farmer, Md Nazrul Islam, 40, son of Abdul Goni, was gunned down near Ochintopur border of Birampur upazila in Dinajpur yesterday morning.    

He lived in Chapla village.

In the shooting, another man received bullet injuries but his identity could not be confirmed. 

Witnesses said BSF members opened fire at them when they were sowing paddy in a field, leaving Nazrul dead on the spot.

Apart from the two, a man was also picked up from the area by the BSF.

Lt Col Jahidur Rashid, commanding officer of BGB battalion 30, said a letter was sent to the BSF asking for a flag meeting.

In Thakurgaon, BSF arrested four Bangladeshis near Nagorvita border in Baliadangi  upazila on Sunday evening and yesterday morning.

The four are Sadequl, 28, Alam Hossain, 23, Jamiruddin, 23, of  Samirnagar Colony village, and Zahidul Islam, 28, of Moshaldangi village.

Sadequl, Alam and Jamiruddin were arrested yesterday morning while Zahidul was held on Sunday evening.

BGB and local sources said Sadequl, Alam and Jamiruddin were held in Chorvita village of India when they were returning to Bangladesh.

Zahidul, who went to India in search of work, was also detained in Indian land.

BGB battalion 30 Director in Thakurgaon Lt Col Tushar Bin Yunus said steps were on to bring the detainees back.

A meeting at the company commander level between BGB and BSF officials was held yesterday.

Tushar said BSF claimed to have recovered 75,000 Indian rupees from the four men.

A cattle trader named Mobarak Ali was picked by BSF officials from Adatala frontier in Sapahar upazila of Naogaon early yesterday.

The 25-year-old was held when he was returning with cattle from India.   

BGB 14 Adatala Company Commander Subedar Abul Bashar said Mobarak was held around 4am when he was crossing pillar no 244.   

A letter was sent to the BSF to release Mobarak but they replied that he was handed over to police in Dakshin Dinajpur district on charges of illegal entry, he added.

A young drug peddler detained by the BSF near Darshana border in Damurhuda upazila of Chuadanga was handed over to the BGB on Sunday night.

Md Ali, 25, who was detained along with 24 bottles of phensidyl and two bottles of liquor was released after a meeting between BGB and BSF officials.

Darshana BGB Camp Commander Subedar Robiul Islam and checkpost immigration officer Mahbubur Rahman attended the meeting on behalf of BGB while Company Commander of Gede camp of BSF battalion 173 Dipak Thappa represented the BSF.   

Chuadanga 6 BGB battalion Director SM Moniruzzaman said Ali and several others entered the Indian village of Gede by crossing pillar no 75 on Sunday evening to buy phensidyl.

“BSF officials chased the men when they were returning to Bangladesh and detained Ali while others managed to flee,” he added.
