4.7m new voters in EC’s updated list of 96.2m

Update : 01 Feb 2015, 07:21 PM

The Election Commission published on their official website yesterday the updated voter list, which now counts 96,198,652 voters, with 48,451,642 male voters and 47,747,010 female voters.

A total of 4,695,650 fresh names have been added, and the ratio of male to female voters in the new list is now 50.37: 49.63.

According to the EC, those who turned 18 years old by January 1 this year were included in the new voter list. This was done with a view to the EC starting the voter list updating project from May 15, 2014, and a total of 5,105,953 voters applied to be included in the updated voter list.

However, after cutting out the names of deceased voters, the names of those who failed to appear on the day photos were taken, and the names of voters who had migrated, 4,695,650 names were put on the updated list.

As part of this updating process, the EC collected pictures, fingerprints, and detailed information from the citizens who applied, and it also determined, using the Automatic Finger Identification System (AFIS), whether or not an applicant was a double voter.

A total of 109,500 voters were identified as double voters during this process, or 12% of total voters.

The EC published a draft voter list on their website on January 2, giving voters until January 22 to make any corrections to the information they had provided.
