FBCCI to hold rallies on February 8 against political unrest

The leaders of Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) have once again decided to hold a countrywide rallies on February 8, carrying the national flags to press both the ruling and the opposition political parties for restoring a business-friendly atmosphere through resolving the ongoing political deadlock.

Apart from the apex body, businessmen from across the country will also bring out the procession for 15 minitutes from 12.00 noon to 12:15pm on that day.

FBCCI President Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed came up with the disclosure after an emergency meeting with the board to discuss about the possible programmes to face the current political situation for the sake of protecting the country’s business, which is about to face a closure like situation.

FBCCI First Vice President Monowara Hakim Ali and Vice President M Helal Uddin were also present at the briefing.

On December 15, 2013, the apex trade body held a white-flag demonstration with other trade chambers and associations across the country, demanding a peaceful solution to the then ongoing political deadlock for the sake of the country’s economy and business friendly environment.

As the FBCCI represents over 3.5 crore businessmen across the country, along with them, “We will hold rallies across the country carrying the national flags in hands from Teknaf to Tetulia in protest against the destructive political activities and arson attacks,” said Akram.

“There will be no speech during the planned rally as it might create different types of opinion. Instead, we will just sing national anthem and chant the slogan ‘Save Country, Save Economy’,” he added.

Akram said: “We will sit with all the former presidents of the apex trade body and other business bodies to convey our decisions before finalising date for holding the rally.”

After holding the rally, the FBCCI will seek appointments from the President, the Prime Minister and the BNP chairperson to place its demands for ending the political stalemate.

As the country is above all things, we, the businessmen will hold the rally just to save the country and the economy, which already badly suffered by the political unrest, said Akram.

“Through holding the procession, we would like to give a clear message to all the political parties and the government that the country’s interest should be the top priority,” he added.

On January 28, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) held human chain, urging the government to ensure peaceful environment for the businesses and the opposition to shun violence.

They also submitted separate memorandums to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to end political crises.
