Turongomi Repertory Dance, the first dance theatre troupe of the country, brings on stage “Waterness,” a unique blend of dance and drama inspired by the life of Rabindranath Tagore. The production kicks off at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy today.
Directed by Pooja Sengupta, the production reflects the resemblance between women and water.
“My initial idea to work on the abstractness of women first came to mind as I encountered the theme in Tagore’s poetry. Eventually I started working on the theme to bring production on stage. However, in the meantime, I met Dheeman Bhatyacharya from Kolkata, a writer and researcher, who was working on the idea of how women and water resemble each other in Tagore’s work. He shared the idea with me and later we developed the whole production for the stage,” says Pooja.
“He convinced me that it was not possible to tell a story only through dance or only through theatre. So we combined dance, theatre and mime for the production,” Pooja told the Dhaka Tribune.
Kadambari Devi, Mrinalini Devi and Indira, the three women in Tagore’s life, will be portrayed by Pooja while Raktim Goshwami and Atique Rahman will play the role of Tagore.
