Taliban attack kills over 100 at Pakistan school

Update : 16 Dec 2014, 07:57 AM

More than 100 people have been killed and others taken hostage in a Taliban assault on an army-run school in Peshawar in Pakistan.

Among them 84 were students, officials said.

Five or six militants wearing security uniforms entered the school, local officials told the media. Gunfire and explosions have been heard in the area.

The army has cordoned off the site but it is not clear if soldiers entered.

A Taliban spokesman told the BBC the assault was in response to army operations against the militants.

Hundreds of Taliban fighters are thought to have died in a recent military offensive in North Waziristan and the nearby Khyber area.

Some 500 students are believed to have been at the Army Public School. It is not clear how many have been taken hostage.

A school worker and a student interviewed by the local Geo TV station said the attackers had entered the Army Public School's auditorium, where a military team was conducting first-aid training for students.

Ambulances and a helicopter have been seen in the area.

More than 20 students and teachers have been taken to a nearby hospital in Peshawar.
