Latif Siddique shifted to hospital for chest pain

Update : 06 Dec 2014, 06:24 PM

Sacked minister Abdul Latif Siddique was admitted to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University from the Dhaka Central Jail yesterday after he complained of chest pain.

Latif fell sick only a day before a metropolitan magistrate court is set to hold hearing on the charge framing matter in a case filed against him for hurting religious sentiment. It is not confirmed whether the “sick” accused would be taken to the court to attend the hearing.

The lawmaker was taken to the BSMMU around 4:30pm as per suggestion of doctors at the Dhaka Central Jail, its Senior Superintend Forman Ali told the Dhaka Tribune.

“We first got information about his feeling chest pain around 10:30am. Then our jail doctors started examining him. His health did not improve after an hour-long examination. Then we sought police protection to shift him to the BSMMU for better treatment,” Forman said.

Latif was admitted to the Cabin Block with chest pain and high blood pressure. “He has been treated under cardiology department’s Professor Dr Sazal Banarjee,” BSMMU Director Brig Gen (retd) Abdul Majid Bhuiyan said.

“The complications of the former minister can be learnt after getting the examination reports. If necessary, a medical board will be formed tomorrow [today],” he added.

Latif was sent to jail on November 25 by a Dhaka court upon his surrender. Pro-BNP lawyer Abed Raja filed the case on October 2 with the Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court for Latif’s remarks made on September 28 during a meeting in New York.
