Update : 03 Dec 2014, 05:05 AM

Bangladesh has ranked 14th among 175 countries of the world in the corruption index, said Transparency International Perception Report 2014.

According to the report, the country secured 145th position, scoring 25 in a scale of 0-100 by sliding down two steps from the position in 2013.

In 2013, Bangladesh climbed seven places in the ranking of 177 countries to 136th position, while its benchmark score was 27.

Bangladesh chapter of the anti-corruption watchdog published the report on Wednesday.

According to the TIB, Bangladesh has scored 25 whereas the global average is 43. Among the seven South Asian countries Bangladesh's position is below five countries.

Guinea, Kenya, Laos and Papua New Guinea also remained at par with Bangladesh, each scoring 25.

Bhutan is the least corrupt country in South Asia, while Afganistan is the worst, according to the Berlin-based watchdog's latest report.

Afghanistan secured 172nd position with a score of 12. Other two South Asian countries, Nepal and Pakistan scored 29 and held 126th position jointly in the list.

In the list, India and Sri Lanka jointly secured 85th position with 38 points.

Denmark secured the top position in the index, scoring 92 while Somalia and North Korea ranked as the most corrupt countries with the score of eight.

The index was prepared analysing facts collected between February, 2011 and August, 2014.

More than rank, the score is important and if people look at Bangladesh's score it is substantially below the global average of 43, said the TIB.

Transparency International considered Bangladesh to be the most corrupt country in the world for the five years up to 2005. In 2006, it was the third most corrupt country.
