A Jessore court yesterday sent 43 leaders and activists of local units of BNP and its front organisations and Jatya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa) in two cases filed by police for obstructing them from performing their duties in Jessore on September 1.
Judge Maruf Ahmed of senior judicial magistrate amali adalat (Ka Anchal) passed the order after a hearing of the cases, cancelling their bail petition.
Maruful Islam, mayor of Jessore City Corporation and also president of BNP Jessore city unit; Abdus Samad Biswas, mayor of Keshabpur municipality and also president of BNP Keshabpur unit; Nistar Faruk, chairman of Manirampur Sadar Union Parishad, among others, appeared before the court seeking their bail.
On September 1, Asgar Ali, the then sub-inspector at Katwali police station, filed the cases against 143 people by name and several others unnamed after a clash between police and leaders activists of BNP and its alliance parties on charges of obstructing police from performing their duties and opening fire at them.
On that day, at least 15 people, including journalists, were injured during the clash.
A clash ensued in Jessore district town between police and BNP activists following a human chain programmed organised by the local BNP.
